We decided to take a day off between the 2nd and 3rd days exploring the Wats of Angkor and ended up taking a 1/2 day tour to the floating village of Chong Khneas on the shores of the Tonle Sap lake.
We drove about an hour from Siem Reap along the Siem Reap river. We stopped and boarded a long boat and rode the rest of the way down the river through the floating village to the lake. We stopped at a restaurant out in the lake and rested for a while before returning back up the river to the van then back to Siem Reap.
Although there was really only the one stop and our guide didn’t speak much English, seeing the floating village during the dry season was quite a sight. Houses and buildings stood 20 or 30 feet above ground supported by a network of wooden pilons and stilts. During the wet season the river reaches close to the doorstep and everyone moves around by boat only; the roads would be under water.
